Don't ask me to cook the eggs

In my previous two blogs ago, "A Corgi in Southern California" some of you (not many) may remember where I had a disaster cooking eggs for boiled eggs.  At the time my son was working a valet job and my hubby was working another job and I was home alone (with Koda our previous corgi) in charge of cooking eggs and potatoes for a potato salad our son would put together for our next door neighbors who had people over to watch football, their team being the Green Bay Packers.

I was in charge of cooking the potatoes and the eggs so son could make the potato salad when he finished work and get the meat prepared for smoking.  I prepared the potatoes for cooking and put them and the eggs on the stove, but then I got engrossed in a book the Winter Garden and I totally forgot the potatoes and eggs cooking.  Really, it was a good book.  When I realized I had things on the stove, all the water had cooked out from both the eggs and the potatoes.  The potatoes were salvageable, the eggs weren't.  Thankfully we had more eggs at home to cook and the second time around I kept track of them better and they were cooked and useable.

So you would think I would have learned my lesson right?

Wrong.  About two weeks ago on a Saturday afternoon I put some eggs on to boil for hard boiled eggs.  My breakfasts most days of the week are 1 hard boiled egg and a package of instant oatmeal.  Side note.  Winslow loves hard boiled eggs (they are safe for dogs).  He has Egg Friday and Egg Sunday when he gets one.  He inhales them (chopped up) in less than 10 seconds.

Anyway, I put the eggs on for cooking and I sit down by the desktop computer.  Hubby is finishing up practice for the worship service at church and then getting a shower before he has to leave.

A little later I hear a popping sound.  I kind of look but don't think too much of it.  A few minutes later I hear another popping sound.  Winslow has been sleeping by me and with each popping sound he kind of does a little bark.  After the second one I get up to go back to the bedroom where hubby is to see if he heard something.  He's about done getting ready, just tying his shoes.  I mention the popping noise.  He confirms he heard it.  And then I say "MY EGGS!!!" and go running to the kitchen, expecting to see a fire.

Thankfully!!! the water had just cooked out of the eggs once again.  No fire but ruined eggs.  Peeled one to see if I could use them but you could taste the burnt smell so all of them went down the garbage disposal.

After the pot cooled down, I put more eggs on to cook.  BUT this time I set the timer for 30 minutes so I would remember them.

And subsequently have done the same every time I have cooked eggs since.  May be a slow learner, but found a fix that hopefully I'll continue to use :)

So if you have me over to help cook, please don't ask me to cook the eggs.  It won't be pretty with how they might turn out :)

(Any recent cooking disasters your way?)

  1. 'Disasters' like these happen often in my kitchen. Anyway, cooking potatoes on the stove, may take at least 30 minutes; boiled eggs - no more than 10-12 minutes. I like them both, separately and in a salad. With smoked meat, it sounds a delicious meal prepared by your son for the football watchers.

  2. I always set a timer for everything these days because otherwise, I’ll forget! I even set a timer to pick up my daughter from work if she’s working a different shift. What eggs are you making that take so long? I make hard boiled eggs by getting them to a rolling boil and then cover them with heat turned off for 11 minutes. Then ice bath.

  3. Oh Betty, I'm RFLMAO. (Sorry, not sorry. LOL) Years ago my Tom did the same thing, and a couple of the eggs actually exploded. Thank goodness, he cleaned up the mess himself. I'm still using my Egglettes, but ask Alexa to remind me when 16 minutes is up.
The only recent cooking disaster I can think of, I over-cooked the sausage and peppers in the instantpot and the meat came out like mush .. like something you'd spoon-feed a baby. At least we can laugh at ourselves!

  4. Oh I can feel your pain!!! Who hasn't messed up boiled eggs????????????

1/2 hour... We boil ours for 10 min. Turn off heat and let them sit in the hot water for another 10 min. Then put them under cold water in the sink. Then in a dish, in the refrig. till wanted.

    Just sayin'...

  5. Oh my, I have been there and done that several times. The eggs even exploded once. Actually I don't even leave the kitchen anymore when I'm making hard boiled eggs.

  6. Oh no, glad it wasn't serious. I have wandered off to let pots boil over on the stove before. Sometimes when I am busy multitasking, I will set a timer on my phone so I be sure to go back to the stove. I have a friend who not once, but twice set off the smoke alarms in their home while making humming bird nectar for her feeder. House full of smoke.... Fire trucks and everything!

  7. *haha* So boiled eggs are not your forte, Betty... that's ok. But timers really do save the day for me too so... just keep using yours and all will be well. ~Andrea xoxoxo

  8. We all have kitchen disasters, they make for good stories to share during the holidays!! When I make eggs, I fill a pot with cold water, eggs go in, let it come to a boil, turn it off, put the lid on and wait 10 minutes. You will have perfectly cooked, hard boiled eggs in 10 minutes! Try it, you’ll see, It works every single time!

  9. Been there! These days, I don't take any chances - I set a timer for anything that is cooking on the stove.

Debbie's method works perfectly for me too.

    Have a great weekend, Betty!

  10. My husband does the cooking. He has ruined pans, set potholders on fire, melted my measuring cups (I do some baking - formerly scratch baking but not at present). If I cooked, I would probably do the same thing as you in incident #1 - get distracted by a good book. Maybe that's why husband cooks! (no, that's not why, but...) Thank heavens for digital assistants. My major use of Alexa and Siri are as timers. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  11. The timer is key! And sometimes I've missed that.

  12. I set timers on my phone for everything or I will certainly forget! I get distracted way too easy! I especially have been using it lately for when I put particular clothes in the dryer for 5 minutes before I hang them! If I don't set the timer they go through the whole dry cycle!

  13. Timers are our friends! Admittedly, I have also cooked eggs until they pop - only one time, though ;)

  14. I guess we have all done that. I left some so long that the fire melted the pot!
Debbie is correct just bring them to a full boil . Remove from heat put a lid on and a timer for 10 mins….Then run under cold water…Perfectly cooked every time!

  15. Alaska's a fan of scrambled eggs. And omelets. It's the only way I can get her to take meds... I make an omelet, then separate a piece and hide the pill(s) in it. Then I sit on the couch and eat the other half of the omelet and feed her the pill pieces one at a time. She thinks we're sharing. :)

  16. Winter Garden is one of my favorite books and Kristen Hannah is one of my favorite authors. I read Four Winds in January and loved it.

  17. 30 minutes? That's a little excessive. From the time the waters starts boiling the eggs only need five to seven minutes to be hard boiled.

  18. Oh dear. I have done that, or nearly that, a time or two. Many years ago I was home alone, TG being out of town. I was making chicken on the stove. I forgot all about it until I smelled something burning, ran to the stove, turned it off, but too late because the smoke alarm went off at that very moment. I ran to the panel to shush the alarm, and I never heard the phone ring (this was when we had a land line, and if your alarms went off for any reason, they called to check on you) ... so I went about my business but several minutes later I heard a rumbling in the street and peered out just in time to see a tall, handsome fireman rounding about towards the side of my house with a huge metal hook in his hand ... haaahaha I flung open the door and said HEY!!! And he came up the steps grinning and I said, everything is okay! I turned off the alarm and no one called! And he said, we have to come when a smoke alarm is activated, and I said, well I just burned the chicken and he said ... SMELLS GOOD!!!! We had a good laugh and since then I have never had the fire department at my door. xoxo
