And this is why I keep on working :)

This was dinner tonight.  Salmon, Brussel sprouts on the BBQ grill, and a veggie medley of green beans/carrots/potato also cooked on the grill.  All veggies were cooked in aluminum foil pouches.

Everything was delicious! Super delicious! Pretty much healthy except hubby used some honey in the Brussel sprout marinade which had the highest calorie content of anything else we ate.

Perhaps the wine was a bit high in calories, but hey, its Friday! Got to enjoy the start of the weekend!

I mentioned this before (I think) on this blog or my other blog but now that hubby is retired he is in charge of coming up with what is cooked on Friday nights for dinner. I meal plan the other nights of the week.  All his entrees are delicious and I've enjoyed them all.

Since hubby is retired and I'm still working, he has taken on the responsibility of cleaning the house (LOVE IT).  I mentioned before I do a little cleaning each day (Monday kitchen, Tuesday bathrooms, Wednesdays sheets changed, Friday vacuuming); chores that are designed to be about 20-30 minutes.  I never have a completely clean house but then never a completely dirty house.  Hubby adopted my method of cleaning with a few variations that still has the house cleaned weekly, albeit not on the same day.  I'm not cleaning so I'm perfectly happy with it.  When we both were working and he had a long commute, I always did all the house cleaning so its not like I'm taking super advantage of him.  He still has plenty of time to do the things he wants to do.

I mentioned this before way back on my other blog but he is a shopper and I am not.  He likes to peruse each aisle.  I want out of the store as quickly as possible.  When he first retired and I was working, we used to do grocery shopping together on Saturday mornings.  But then I got the BRILLANT idea to have him do the grocery shopping himself on Fridays.  I give him the list of what we need for meal planning ahead, etc. and he adds what he wants for his Friday meal, etc.

It is working out great! I rarely step into a grocery store these days. The disadvantage is he spends just a bit more than I would on certain things and he impulsively buys some other things (chips, junk food and the like) but for the most part he sticks to the list.

I could retire, but really, why do I want to? Someone cleaning my house and going shopping for me.  I couldn't be happier with the arrangement!

What is your favorite part of grocery shopping?

  1. Men could be very good with cooking, cleaning and shopping, especially when they retire. Then, they find ,that house chores are more relaxing and pleasant than commute, work, boss, coworkers.
Grocery shopping is an essential activity; these days, with the virus in the background, it's also a chance to see other people as we still don't venture far from home.

  2. That’s a great system. I’m actually thinking of going back to work my my husband retires, if I can find something fun to do. I use the same cleaning method as you and my house always seems very clean, which I like!

I don’t mind grocery shopping and enjoy finding bargains (my store discontinues stuff all the time and deep discounts it) and finding new products.

  3. What a WIN-WIN lifestyle you've created! How I wish Tom enjoyed housework. He, too, loves to peruse each aisle in the grocery stores. Last year when just about everything and everyone was in shut-down, limiting his excursions hurt his heart. (LOL) Me? I only love to browse when I'm at a Publix. (Think AJ's only less expensive.)

  4. It sounds like you've got a *wonderful* setup there, with hubby doing the chores at home. It keeps him busy too, which is a good thing for all retired hubbies everywhere! *haha* Keeping up with the chores outside plus the repairs on this homestead is enough to keep my retired hubby busy but being retired he is more at my "beck and call" if something desperately needs to be done & I just don't have the time OR energy. My oldest daughter's husband has always been the "keeper of home" and my daughter works full-time. He's always been home to care for the children and is home now too, in case the kids need to come home from school or are on break or whatever. Having one person at home, to keep the home fires burning, is the perfect design in my view. ~Andrea xoxoxo

  5. My husband retired 2 1/2 years ago, and took on most of the cooking, most of the house cleaning and grocery shopping....for the most part it is fabulous. I plan on retiring in a year, when I hope we will do lots of traveling!

  6. I HATE all shopping!!!!! -grin- He likes to take his time. For his own stuff, that is. In a grocery store, I am in charge and move, move, more both us us. -smile-

I think you have a great setup, and it works for both of you.

Here, we are *old,* so no one is working. We share cleaning and cooking. I'd never had a totally clean house either, unless I had 'the Maids' in.

Which I intend to do, soon. Just to get it alllllll done! And carry on from there. -smile-

  7. My husband (fully retired) does most of the shopping (I work part time 16 to 20 hours a week). I think he would rather not have me along because I always pick stuff up that isn't on the list. He cooks. I wash the dishes (no dishwasher, my choice.) He starts the washing machine; I do the rest. He likes to be busy, and loves to cook (I hate it). Whatever works, for both of us! 8. Your meal looks delicious!
I am not typically a fan of grocery shopping. I did all of it when our kids were still in the nest, and once they were all out, I "retired". My husband had to learn a new skill :). We're similar to you and your husband - he spends more time, I just want to get in and out quickly! I see why you're happy to keep on working!

  9. Could your husband (and you of course) - come here and talk to my husband - I do everything! Hard to get him to even want to work on the house or yard. Sorry just being honest here.

  10. You have an awesome hubby and a great system! Sigh, I wish someone else would do the cooking, cleaning, and shopping! Clint will hit Sam's for cases of water and such, and grab milk occasionally but that's about it. I pretty much do it all, but then I am home while he is at work. I don't mind the shopping and my fav part is looking for sales and clearance items. I usually clean house for 30 mins at a time, take a break, then if needed I do another 15-20 mins. My house is never fully clean this way either but it isn't a disaster.

  11. when i worked (we both worked) i had a girl come in and clean for me, it was wonderful!! now that we are both home, in a home office, semi-retired, but not really, we both pitch in. i would like to have someone come in and do it still, i would rather we both spend our time other ways, but it's hard to find someone!!

my husband had done all of the food shopping for years and years, he loves doing it. now, i order our groceries online and have them delivered from our local food store. we also use home chef for 3 meals per week. i LOVE home chef.

looks like the husband is a good cook, mine is getting there!!

husbands should help with everything. it is so old fashioned to think that home responsibilities only belong to woman!!

  12. When my husband retired and I was still working he took over the cleaning except for the bathrooms! He left those for me! I usually like grocery shopping because Meijers has more than just groceries like clothes, purses etc... I like to browse around before I get to the actual groceries! My husband like yours will pick up more junk food than I will. Lately he' been coming with me a lot!

  13. I'm glad that is working out for you. His dinner looked delicious. I have zero motivation and I'm home everyday. The house is dusty and I'm embarrassed about it yet I do nothing. Way to go on working, setting up meal plans and doing housework. I shopped on Friday and the store was totally rearranged and I hated it! Mark is a better shopper but I've gotten pretty good at Instacart.

  14. I enjoy having the time to spot new products in the store. We are both retired and I realized hubby was playing golf while I was doing everything else. We had a talk. Now he makes the bed every morning and does the dishes every night….maybe he will learn to cook. Who knows?

  15. That's good that you two have gone back and forth for who does the most work around the house. I like the clean something every day method a lot more than the one big cleaning day method. It feels less burdensome in small chunks than it does to spend ALL day cleaning, especially since that pretty much cuts your weekend in half.

My favorite parts of grocery shopping are finding great sales on things we need. Harris Teeter is my favorite because it doesn't take the sales off until the end and it's fun to watch the total plummet. I'm easily entertained, I guess. My other favorite is finding some new ingredient to try, like a spice I've never heard of, or a cheese we've never had.

  16. Sounds like a win-win lifestyle for you, Betty.

Hubby does the grocery shopping and taking out the trash and I do the rest.

Looks like your hubs is a good cook - mine can only cook instant ramen and eggs!

  17. My husband does a lot of cooking and grocery shopping but I do the house cleaning. I usually spend my day off cleaning. We both step in on the dishes and laundry.
Good news….a 4oz glass of red wine is only about 70 calories. Cheers.
