polar opposites

Being a musician is so exhausting!!

Winslow likes to be very near to hubby so when hubby was practicing guitar, Winslow had to get in on the act too.  Almost looks like he is playing with the pedals!

Hubby said it was very challenging playing but he worked around Winslow.

Yes, Winslow is very spoiled.  Perhaps more than our previous corgi, Koda, and that was one spoiled dog :)

Koda was such a mellow dog except if he was around motorcycles, buses, trash trucks, and other dogs then he would wildly bark.  We used to call him Cujo during those times.  At home he basically slept a lot of the day away.  He didn't really initiate much play or really wanted to play.  I would walk him 45 minutes to an hour in the morning and in the evening hubby and me would take him for another long walk too so he got plenty of exercise.  He had an amazing sense of time (probably because I was bad and gave him food from the table) so he would nudge me around noontime when I was working at home because he knew that was my break time and he would come around us at about 7:45 p.m. to let us know it was his dinnertime at 8 p.m.  He also knew when hubby was due home from work and would lie at the door waiting for him.  Of course he sometimes did it at 10 o'clock in the morning when hubby wouldn't be home until 5 p.m.  He also laid by the door waiting for son to come home at curfew.  Curfew was 10 p.m. on school nights and he was at the door waiting at about 9:45 p.m.  He was the "perfect" dog.  He was calm enough to sleep on the bed with us at the foot, but would wander up to my pillow after I got out of bed (I was usually the first one up).  Sometimes he would wander up earlier to my pillow when I was still in bed but a gentle "its not time yet" would get him to move back to the foot of the bed.

So after we lost him and we started at times talking about getting another dog after our year of grieving was over, I was hesitant because I kept saying we would get the dog from hell, like totally opposite.  Kind of like parents have the first "perfect" baby then their second child is the exact opposite.  That was my concern.

I was right.  Winslow is the exact opposite of Koda.  He is hyper and very energetic.  He wants and initiates play constantly (watch for a post down the line about tennis balls and fetching them).  He is most active between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. and its like trying to run down energy on a hyperactive child.  We don't walk him at night because of safety issues so we'll take him to the dog park to release some energy.  He, unlike Koda, likes dogs.  Koda didn't like to be around any other dogs.  Winslow is friendly and likes to play with other furry friends.  We tried to get him to walk on the treadmill and had a trainer come out and help us, but he didn't take to it too well and now he avoids the treadmill room, fearing he'll end up on the treadmill again.  For those who wonder if it is safe on a treadmill, it is for dogs if done the right way and there is even a mobile service here in the Phoenix area that will come to your house, get your dog, and run it on their treadmills in their van.

I can never imagine him sleeping on the bed with us.  Koda started to at about a year old.  Winslow is 15 months old.  He sleeps in a nice size crate in our room with plenty of room to spread out and I think he sleeps quite contently.

Koda loved car rides and would sit in my lap faced out towards my window.  Of course if a bus, motorcycle, trash truck or loud vehicle came up by us then he would bark and go crazy, but otherwise he was perfectly content to look out the window for literally hours.  Winslow is getting more used to car rides but he likes to perch on hubby's right arm and look out the front window.  We haven't done many long rides with him yet but plan to slowly build up to them down the road (no pun intended :)

So, yep, polar opposites.  Both loved, both spoiled (though like I said above I think Winslow is a bit more spoiled).

Both Koda and Winslow favored hubby over me, but I think Winslow does it more since hubby is home with Winslow now that he is retired and before I was home with Koda and now I'm out working.

One thing I know for sure.  I won't have energy to get another puppy and more than likely Winslow will be our last dog.

  1. I think they are both adorable, Betty. I remember Koda well.

  2. We were never able to have a dog, because our daughter was very allergic to dog's dander. We did have a couple of cats.

No need to walk cats, or let them, use up excess energy. -smile-

And I can not handle barking. My personal feeling. Not necessary to be anyone else's. But, that is as it is.

YOu are in good company, with corgis. Tasha Tudor, Queen Elizabeth and Bill O'Reilly.

  3. Opposites, yet both Koda and Winslow, adorable and loved by their owners.
Spending time with the dog, protecting him physically and providing him with food, will keep the dog happy and make him 'human's best friend'.

  4. Both of them are fun and sweet in their own ways. I follow an Instagram wiener dog that used a treadmill for his physical therapy after back surgery. He was a real trooper!

  5. Lord he is cute. Alaska doesn't sleep in the bed with us, or even get up on the couch. She doesn't bark. Doesn't jump up on people. She has dog anxiety but is much, MUCH better now that we've done a ton of training with her. She goes to day care once a week to stay comfortable around other dogs. She doesn't pull on a leash. She recalls beautifully when off leash, even stopping on her own so that we can put her leash back on and then safely walk back to the street.

She is the perfect dog for us. I don't know if we will ever get another dog, as our cat Mr. Chewey was the prefect cat for us, and I can't bring myself to ever want another.

  6. Pets just like people have their very own personalities and quirks like no other. I've had several cats with awesome personalities and was so sad when they were gone knowing I'd never find that again. Such sweet memories of Koda and he sounds like he was a very smart pup. Winslow had some big shoes to fill but it seems like he's done just that in his own way. I would love to get a small dog just like Winslow, but I just don't want to take care of one. The three cats are about all I can handle.

  7. I love learning more about Winslow! So cute, his being his daddy's sound engineer!
And delighted to hear he's being spoiled, as all fur-babies deserve. Macie and Grace both seem to have some of Caraleigh in them -- different traits, both physically (Macie) and personality (Grace). I still miss her terribly; and on occasion have been known to call Macie, "Cara."

Okay, this may sound terribly silly (senile?) but there are times I swear her angel soul's come to inhabit the girls.

  8. I see you spoil your pets just like I do! We have 3 cats and when they are all gone then, like you, that will be the end of pets for us! Winslow is a hoot though! He keeps you entertained!

  9. I loved reading about Koda and Winslow. Definitely opposites. Sweet memories of Koda and Winslow is so cute. I know that I want another dog but it is a lot of work. Hopefully soon I can get one. Enjoyed the photos.

  10. He sure is a cutie! It's always interesting how even if there are similarities in the breeds, each dog is very much their own little personality. I have two dogs currently- different breeds and entirely different personalities too! Keeps me busy :) Have a happy Saturday!

  11. I can TOTALLY relate! We lost our dog Jackie last year and just now got another one. It's totally different breed (Boson terrier) and if we had known he would be so "lively" I think we would have thought twice. I didn't really want another pet, because the feeding and walking and bathing all falls on me. But I knew hubby missed having someone greet him when he came home. We love Coco too, but I can totally relate when you say this will be our last pet. It takes a lot of energy to keep a pet happy and we are getting older, plus with having grandkids now...they give us plenty of joy.

  13. All I can say is, Winslow is a precious looking dog and I am sure Koda was just as precious, if not more so. When we lost our beloved Chihuahua, Javier, on April 11th of 2016, of old age (he was 17 and we'd had him his entire life), I waited until the following January to go to the rescue facility and pick out my Rizzo. He's a Chiweenie (Chihuahua Dachshund mix) and is truly the perfect dog. His only flaw is that he will not walk on a leash when I go for my daily walk. Just flat-out refuses. He used to, but one day he just said, no more. So I had to cut his kibble ration in half and give him green beans for the other part of his food later in the day, because he was getting fat. He also gets one large Milk Bone per day, and he gets it at five o'clock and he knows when it is five o'clock and comes to find me. My tuxedo cat, Sweetness, can also tell time because she starts going nuts at six o'clock each evening when it is time for her wet food. They are so adored and adorable, just like your Winslow. But then there's no breed cuter than a Welsh Corgi! xoxo
